Mouthguard Use in Athletes

Part of the mouthguard effect is simply opening the
hypopharyngeal airway (bottom of the throat) or in some cases preventing
its collapse via the forward thrusting of the lower jaw. Similar devices
are manufactured all the time for the treatment of mild sleep apnea.
I used to use one aptly named the Silencer for some years before I switched
to a positive airway pressure machine. The dental device is called
“oral appliance therapy” (OAT).

The last two summers, I climbed 14,000 foot mountains in Colorado, and I could not
have done it without my OAT in place. Once you use one, it’s
obvious you cannot only breath easier, but it feels (and is probably so)
that you are drawing in a deeper volume of breath. So, part of what’s being
described here is as simple as enhancing oxygenation.
